MUMBAI | BENGALURU: The top two Indian ecommerce players will battle it out over smartphones this festive season with leader Flipkart targeting four times the sale clocked by the competition and Amazon aiming to cross its annual growth rate of more than 100% in this category during its month-long sale.

"We expect one out of every two customers buying a smartphone in India to be from the Flipkart site during the sale," said Ayyappan Rajagopal, senior director, mobiles, at Flipkart. Flipkart's The Big Billion Days sale is from September 20-24 and rival Amazon is expected to announce its dates soon but will also target the festive period. Sales for both will continue during this month long festive period.

Arun Srinivasan, director, smartphones and consumer electronics for Amazon India, said his company has more than doubled its selection of exclusive smartphones across price segments. Giving an indication of expected demand during its upcoming sale, Amazon said it had recorded a five-fold jump in smartphone sales this July during its 30 hour Prime Day sale.
Both have plans to lure in customers by rolling out EMI options, variations of cashbacks and exchange offers. This aggressive stance was expected, with Flipkart pulling out all stops to maintain its lead in the online market for smartphone and Amazon snapping at its heels.

Counterpoint Research for April-June said Flipkart had 50% share of the online smartphone market, down from 57%, Amazon's share had increased to 33% from 27%.

But Flipkart disputed this number, saying that it has increased market share in terms of gross sales, claiming it has increased from 60% in Q1 to 67% in Q2. Counterpoint data is based on total shipments that come into the platform's channels from brands and sellers.
Counterpoint said the push by both the etailers would grow the online market in third quarter as promotions will be strong ahead of the festive season.

"However, having said that, major online brands are also now expanding offline and favouring multichannel strategy," said a spokesperson for the research house.

Both will hope efforts push sales of smartphones from online platforms, which have hovered around 33% of overall retail sales in the past year, as the price differential with offline nearly disappeared with ecommerce players cutting back discounts.

Smartphones were among the first electronic devices to be sold online and remain among the highest selling segments for ecommerce majors.

Smartphones contributed close to 25% of overall GMV (gross merchandise value) of the ecommerce sales through 2016 and is expected to remain at similar levels in 2017, analysts say, highlighting the criticality of the segment to the ecommerce majors.

Flipkart has dropped its starting range of smartphones on discounts and offers to Rs 3,500 from last year's Rs 6,999 to get a larger chunk of buyers who can also pay EMIs on purchases via debit cards. It will mainly target buyers in the Rs 5,000-20,000 range, compared to last year's Rs 7,000-15,000.

Flipkart has installed a software in their app which informs the customer about the price he will get for his handset.

This helps in exchanges since 90% of customers buying smartphones from the site are upgrading their devices and therefore do not have to depend on shopkeepers to get quotations. Amazon is yet to roll out details of its offers. The fight for non-metros will continue.

Amazon said it has seen a growth of more than 300% in tier I, 450% in tier II and 600% in tier III markets respectively in one year. It says it will fulfil orders at one- or two-day delivery while Flipkart said bulk of its smartphones will be delivered to metros and tier I in three days.

Flipkart has also decided to drop the price of buyback policy from Rs 399 to Rs 99 during these 30 days. If a customer picks up a buy-back policy when he purchases a phone, it guarantees him a minimum amount of return when he wants to sell it for another handset.

The event was jointly organised by IT industry body Nasscom.
Prasad welcomed the launch of the cyber security policy by the state and said Haryana is the first in the country to implement such a policy.
Haryana is a base for thousands of Indian and global tech companies and there is a huge potential for the state to become an electronics and mobile manufacturing hub, he said.
Assuring support to the state government, Prasad said a digital revolution needs to be brought in Haryana and entrepreneurs need to play a larger role in helping with the digital transformation of the villages.

On paying homage at the memorial, he said, “It was a great personal satisfaction for me.” “The only thing I would like to observe today is that Tamil Nadu must prosper. It must continue to develop. That will be the most important condolence and in a way justification for her (Jayalalithaa) and for the work she has done for a great state,” the Union minister said.
Earlier, participating in a function, Prasad recalled an interaction with Jayalalithaa and said how she had regretted on not being a lawyer. “I had the privilege to work with her (Jayalalithaa) very closely, politically and also had the privilege to appear for her legally,” he said.
Recalling a conversation with Jayalalithaa, Prasad said, she was explaining the nuances of her case very well. “I said, Madam you have perfect legal mind. Her response was, Mr Prasad, I regret on not being a lawyer,” he said.
To a query about a commission set up by the state government to probe Jayalalithaa’s death, Prasad said it was an AIADMK matter. “I have nothing to comment (on it). That is a matter of the AIADMK. Yes, I can only say that her age was not her age to go (to die). This I can tell,” he said.
To another query about appointment of a permanent Governor for the State, the Union Minister said, “I think Mr Vidyasagar Rao is doing his job well.” Rao assumed office as the Acting Governor of Tamil Nadu in September 2016.

'Soon, Aadhaar to be linked with driver's licence,' says Union minister RS Prasad

The minister didn't give a time frame to link the unique identification number with driver's licenses.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has yet to rule on whether Aadhaar violates privacy.
Last month, the top court declared privacy a fundamental right.

NEW DELHI: Soon, Aadhaar will be linked to one's driver's licence, said Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday.
The minister didn't give a time frame to link the unique identification number with driver's licences.
His comment though comes even as the Supreme Court has yet to rule on whether Aadhaar violates privacy, something it plans to do in November.
Before ruling on Aadhaar and privacy, the apex court took up the issue of whether privacy is a fundamental right, and last month ruled that it indeed is.
So, linking Aadhaar with driver's licences may be on the government's agenda, but it remains to be seen whether it is something that can be carried through.
"We are planning to link driving licence to Aadhaar. I have had a word with (Union minister Nitin) Gadkari Ji regarding this," said Prasad on Friday at the at Digital Haryana Summit 2017.]
"So digital identity confirms physical identity with the help of digital technology," the minister elaborated.
The minister further said "PAN was linked to Aadhaar to stop money laundering".
Late last month, the Centre told the Supreme Court it will extend the deadline for mandatory Aadhaar to avail social benefits to December 31 from the earlier September 30.
Attorney General KK Venugopal, on the Centre's behalf, made this statement to a Supreme Court bench when petitioners sought an early the top court's last judgment declaring privacy a fundamental right.

Govt saved Rs 57,000 crore through DBT scheme, says Ravi Shankar Prasad - LATEST FROM CENTRAL GOVERNMENT

Scores of schemes like MGNREGA have been linked to DBT, under which the receivables are transferred directly to the beneficiary's bank accounts, Ravi Shankar Prasad said. "We have saved 57,000 crore, which used to be pocketed by middlemen (earlier)," he said at the Digital Haryana Summit.

The government saved Rs 57,000 crore, “pocketed” earlier by middlemen, through the use of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in various public schemes, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said On Friday.
Scores of schemes like MGNREGA have been linked to DBT, under which the receivables are transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank accounts, he said.
“We have saved 57,000 crore, which used to be pocketed by middlemen (earlier),” he said at the Digital Haryana Summit.
The government had informed Parliament that there were over 33 crore beneficiaries under 84 schemes which have been linked to the DBT at the end of February 2017.
Prasad further said that there is a proposal to link Aadhaar with driving licences as well as vehicle registration to ensure that multiple licences are not issued in case anyone seeks to do so.
Referring to the debate on security of Aadhaar data, he said the biometric information — which includes iris scan and fingerprints — is stored in an encrypted form and is very secure.
“If you look at the physical card, it has my photo, says I am a male and has my permanent Patna address at the back. It does not have details like names of my parents, caste, religion, educational qualification, financial income or health records. None of the things by which you can be profiled are mentioned on the Aadhaar card,” he said.
He added that “Aadhaar is a digital identity” which confirms the physical identity with the help of biometrics and there are laws in place to check against unauthorised usage of Aadhaar.
Prasad, along with Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, unveiled a slew of initiatives around IT, startups and cybersecurity.
To boost the startup ecosystem in Gurugram, the state government and IT industry body Nasscom have set up a startup warehouse.
The eighty-four seater unit also has a mobile application development incubation centre within the warehouse. It has already received more than 350 applications from startups for facility.
Besides, the state government also launched Centre for IoT (Internet of Things), Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE), and incubation centres.

APPLE IPHONE 8 LAUNCHED TODAY - SEE FULL DETAILS HERE Apple iPhone 8 launch event: Expected specifications, iPhone X, pricing and more

Apple iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X will be launched by the technology giant in one of its biggest events ever. Apple’s September event will go live at 10.30 pm IST on the Apple website itself and for fans of the company this will be a big one. The iPhone X as it is now being called marks 10 years since the device first launched in January 2007, when Steve Jobs unveiled the touchscreen device. The launch itself is taking place in the Steve Jobs Theater in the new Apple Campus, which is designed like a giant spaceship.
Apple will likely unveil three iPhones.

According to leaked source code, the names will be iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, though we’ll have to wait till Apple officially confirms the same. So what will the new iPhones offer? Here’s a detailed look.

Apple iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Specifications, Price
Apple iPhone 8, iPhone 8 will see some minor upgrades compared to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus series. Now in the past, the expectation was these will be called iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, but that has changed thanks to the new set of leaks. The aluminium chassis design we’ve seen on the iPhone 7 series will continue with the iPhone 8.

Apple will upgrade the processor from the A10 chip to the A11 in the new iPhones and we could see these start at 64GB instead of 32GB. However, the rear camera will likely remain at 12MP on both, though the Plus series will continue to come with the dual rear camera.

iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus won’t be getting an OLED, bezel-less display either unlike the special edition iPhone. Apple will stick with the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch LCD display on these smartphones. The new iPhones will run iOS 11 at launch, and the price could at par with what we’ve seen in the past.

Apple iPhone X Price, Specifications
Apple iPhone X or iPhone Special Edition is the big one. This will have a 5.8-inch bezel-less OLED display, and will actually be more compact than the iPhone 7 Plus or iPhone 8 Plus in terms of size. It will also have a glass and steel design, with the front and back being all glass held together by a steel frame. The device is similar to what the iPhone 4, 4s used to have in terms of design. There’s also going to be a face recognition scanner on the front for unlocking the phone.

What will be gone from the iPhone X is the Touch ID and physical home button on the front, according to leaked images and reports. Touch ID under the display did not prove to be successful for Apple and this particular technology might take some time to appear on phones.

It will come in Black, Silver, Blush Gold and Gold colours, though the front panel is expected to be entirely in black. However, reports from analysts and US media indicate the iPhone X will be in short supply after the launch.

Apple iPhone X will start at 64GB storage with 256GB and 512GB versions also expected. The pricing though could $1000 plus for this special iPhone going up all the way to $1300, which would make this the most expensive one till now. What price Apple picks for the iPhone X in India will be closely watched.

Apple iOS 11
Apple iOS 11 will be powering these new iPhones and it brings some key design changes. The control centre has been re-designed with a single page spread and is more customizable. The taller design also makes it seem this has been made keeping in mind the iPhone X and its taller display.

iOS 11 will also see the App Store undergoing a big change with a new look. The new OS also puts focus on Augmented Reality with Apple making the ARKit available to developers. Overall iOS 11 will bring more features for iPad users. Interestingly new features like Face ID, Animojis etc have also been leaked for the upcoming iPhone.
