The fifth edition of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) gets underway on 28 July and it promises to be bigger, better and more lucrative.
A total of 12 teams will clash in 138 matches across three months in what is arguably India's biggest sports league now.

The latest edition will have four new teams: Tamil Thalaivas, UP Yoddha, Gujarat Fortune Giants and Haryana Steelers. The total prize money at stake is Rs 8 crores, a significant increase of Rs 6 crores from the previous edition. The title winners alone will take home Rs 3 crores.
The first edition was won by Jaipur Pink Panthers while U Mumba claimed the second. Patna Pirates defended their title in 2016 and became two-time champions (2015, 2016) after defeating Jaipur Pink Panthers.
The first match will see Telugu Titans take on new team Tamil Thalaivas in Hyderabad on 28 July.

The matches will be broadcast live on television by Star Sports Network. The tournament will be covered in three languages – Hindi, English and Tamil. The English language coverage will be available on Star Sports 2 and Star Sports 2 HD. The Hindi coverage will be available on Star Sports 1 Hindi and Star Sports 1 HD and the Tamil coverage will be available on Star Sports 1 Tamil and Star Sports 1 Tamil HD. The matches will also be aired on the free-to-air (FTA) channel Star Sports First.

VIVO Pro Kabaddi, India’s biggest sports league, concluded its largest-ever 2-day Player Auction in New Delhi. The auction netted a consolidated price of INR 46.99 crores for 227 players selected over two days of intense bidding between 12 franchises. Star raiders Nitin Tomar, Rohit Kumar and all-rounder Manjeet Chillar were the top buys in the auction, picked by Team U.P., Bengaluru Bulls and Jaipur Pink Panthers, respectively. Jang Kun Lee, retained by Bengal Warriors, is the highest valued international player, at INR 80.3 lacs.
While Day 1 was dominated by Category-A stars, Day 2 saw the franchises finding the perfect balance between experienced and young players, to craft winning teams. On Day 2 of the auction, Indian players from Category B, C and D, went under the hammer. Suraj Desai secured the highest bid on Day 2 by Dabang Delhi K.C. for an amount of INR 52.50 lacs. New entrants also attracted interest of the franchisees on the second day of the auction. Sachin, a Junior National Championships Bronze medallist, was picked by Team Gujarat for an impressive amount of INR 36 lacs.

Recently, Mashal Sports, organizer and administrator of the league and its parent organization STAR India, announced the inclusion of four new teams that will participate in Season 5 of the league. The four new franchises will be represented by Iquest Enterprises Private Limited (Consortium) (Tamil Nadu), Adani Group (Gujarat), GMR Group (Uttar Pradesh) and JSW Group (Haryana). They join the current 8 franchises to make VIVO Pro Kabaddi the biggest league in India – representation of 11 states, 130+ matches and a 13 weeks tournament starting in July 2017.
HOW IT STARTED
The Pro Kabaddi League was founded in 2014 with the inaugural 2014 edition of the tournament being played between eight franchises representing eight Indian cities respectively. The league has a "caravan format," with the teams travelling together to all the eight venues to play a total of sixty matches. The organizing company Mashal Sports was co-founded by Mr. ANAND MAHINDRA, Chairman, Mahindra Group and Mr. Charu Sharma, director of Mashal Sports. Star India acquired a 74% stake in Mashal Sports, and now has control over the entire league as a majority owner of Mashal Sports. Mashal Sports has acquired the rights to organize the league for a period of ten years from International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) with an option to renew it further. Pro Kabaddi League 2017, Season 5 Full Schedule: Date and Time of All the Matches
Hyderabad: The Telugu Titans are all set to kick off the fifth edition of the 12-city Pro Kabaddi League at home at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, from July 28 to August 3.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, team owner Gautham Reddy said the squad was all geared up for the challenges. “The last four matches involving the Telugu Titans were very close and so the side has been prepared to be tough and confident. The players have undergone intense physical training and everyone of us is very excited to test our new players on the bigger platform and take kabaddi to the next level, which has been our commitment,” he said.
“Pro Kabaddi League gives the sport a distinctive contemporary Indian identity. The Telugu Titans team, which now boasts of fresher, fitter and balanced squads, will enhance the quality of action and competition of the upcoming season,” Mr Reddy added.
Veera Sports CEO Pavan Kumar was all praise for Telugu Titans captain Rahul Chaudhari. “Rahul has also led Uttar Pradesh to a gold medal in the 2015 National Kabaddi Championships. The 24-year-old has the most number of raid points in PKL history and the only one in the League to have more than 500 raid points,” he said.
The international draft for the Fifth season of Pro Kabaddi League, too has received a strong response from participating franchises, with 27 international players being signed up from nine countries.
The fifth season of the Pro Kabaddi League will begin on July 28 in Hyderabad with Telgu Titans taking on Tamil Thalaivas. The final will be held on October 28 in Chennai, and 113 matches will be played in the seasons by 12 teams, including four new ones.
The 12 teams have been divided into two zones A and B of six teams each, where each will be playing 15 intra-zone and 7 inter-zone matches, prior to the play offs. The 13-week long season will have top three teams from each zone qualifying for the play offs
There will be there qualifiers and two eliminators before the final.
The winner of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 will play the first Eliminator 1. The winner of Qualifier 3 moves into the final directly and the loser has to play with the Winner of Eliminator 1 in the Eliminator 2, the winner of which goes to the final.
