An operating system (OS) is a system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services  for computer programs  All computer programs, excluding firmware, require an operating system to function.

Single Processor vs Multi Processor System

Single processor system

single-core processor is a microprocessor with a single core on a chip, running a single thread at any one time. The term became common after the emergence of multi-core processors (which have several independent processors on a singlechip) to distinguish non-multi-core designs.
  1. Maximum systems use single processor systems.
  2. Single Processor Systems perform only one process at a given time, and it carries out the next process in the queue only after the current process is completed.
  3. OS monitors the status of them and also sends them next executable instruction.
  4. It relieves CPU of disk scheduling and other tasks.
  5. It is suitable for general purpose computers , as it cannot run multiple processes in parallel.
                    single processor

Multi Processor System

Multiprocessing is the use of two or more central processing units (CPUs) within a single computer system. The term also refers to the ability of asystem to support more than one processor or the ability to allocate tasks between them.

  1. Also known as parallel or tightly coupled systems as they can run multiple process in parallel to each other efficiently.
  2. Two or more processors will be in close communication with each other with shared memory, storage and power supply.
-->In these days rather than using multi processor systems, people tend to buy single processor with multiple cores. This can be more efficient as internal on-chip communication is faster than communication between different processors.
-->Multi-core processors also use less power than that of multiple single core processors.

              Multi Processor

Advantages Of Multi Processor Systems

Economy of scale

Multi Processor Systems cost less than a number of individual single processor system. In the case of multi processor system expenditure for system cabinet, memory power supply, accessories are saved as these systems share resources like power supply, memory and also space.

Increased throughput

As there are a number of processors, more work can be done in less time. These multiple processors run parallel to each other increasing the performance of the system.

Reliability and failure-free

Failure of any processor will not affect the functionality of the system, as there are a number of processors. We can expect failure free service from multi-processor system.

Difference Between Symmetric and Asymmetric Multiprocessing

There are two types of multiprocessing, Symmetric Multiprocessing and Asymmetric Multiprocessing. Multiprocessing system has more than one processor and they can execute multiple process simultaneously. In Symmetric Multiprocessing, processors shares the same memory. In Asymmetric Multiprocessing there is a one master processor that controls the data structure of the system. The primary difference between Symmetric and Asymmetric Multiprocessing is that in Symmetric Multiprocessing all the processor in the system run tasks in OS. But, in Asymmetric Multiprocessing only the master processor run task in OS.

Symmetric Vs Asymmetric Multiprocessing

BASIS FOR COMPARISONSYMMETRIC MULTIPROCESSINGASYMMETRIC MULTIPROCESSING
BasicEach processor run the tasks in Operating System.Only Master processor run the tasks of Operating System.
ProcessProcessor takes processes from a common ready queue, or there may be a private ready queue for each processor.Master processor assign processes to the slave processors, or they have some predefined processes.
ArchitectureAll processor in Symmetric Multiprocessing has the same architecture. All processor in Asymmetric Multiprocessing may have same or different architecture.
CommunicationAll processors communicate with another processor by a shared memory.Processors need not communicate as they are controlled by the master processor.
FailureIf a processor fails, the computing capacity of the system reduces. If a master processor fails, a slave is turned to the master processor to continue the execution. If a slave processor fails, its task is switched to other processors.
EaseSymmetric Multiprocessor is complex as all the processors need to be synchronized to maintain the load balance.Asymmetric Multiprocessor is simple as master processor access the data structure.

                                           OS

What is a clustered operating system?
A computer cluster consists of a set of loosely or tightly connected computers that work together so that, in many respects, they can be viewed as a single system. Unlike grid computers, computer clusters have each node set to perform the same task, controlled and scheduled by software.

Clustered systems are another form of multiprocessor system. This system also contains multiple processors but it differs from multiprocessor system. The clustered system is composed of multiple individual systems that connected together. In clustered system, also individual systems or computers share the same storage and liked to gather via local area network. A special type of software is known as cluster to control the node the systems.
Other form of clustered system includes parallel clusters and clustering over a wide area network. In parallel cluster multiple hosts can access the same data on the shared storage. So many operating systems provide this facility but some special software are also designed to run on a parallel cluster to share data.

What is the use of Windows clustering?
A cluster is a group of independent computer systems, referred to as nodes, working together as a unified computing resource. A cluster provides a single name for clients to use and a single administrative interface, and it guarantees that data is consistent across nodes.

Difference Between Single Processor Systems & Multiprocessor Systems

Parameter
Single Processor Systems
Multiprocessor Systems
Description
If a System contains only one processor for processing than it is called single processor system.
If a System contains two or more than two processors for processing than it is called multiprocessor system.
Use of Co-Processors
Yes, Single Processors uses multiple Controllers that are designed to handle special tasks and can execute limited instruction sets. E.g. DMA Controller, North/South Bridge.
In Multi Processor Systems Two Types of approaches are Used:
1)      Symmetric Multiprocessing(SMP)
2)      Asymmetric Multiprocessing
In Asymmetric Multiprocessing one Processor works as Master and Second Processor act as Slave
And in Symmetric Multiprocessingeach processor performs all the tasks within the operating system.
Throughput
Throughput of Single Processor Systems is less than Multiprocessor Systems Because each and every task is performed by the same processor.
Throughput of Multiprocessor systems is greater than single processor systems. If a System Contains N Processors
than its throughput will be slightly less than N because synchronization must be maintained between two processors and they also share resource which increases certain amount of overhead.
Cost Economic
Single Processor Systems cost more because each processor requires separate resources.i.e. Mass Storage, Peripherals, Power Supplies etc.
Multiprocessor Systems cost less than equivalent multiple single processor systems because they uses same resources on sharing basis.
Design Process
It is Easy to design Single Processor Systems.
It is difficult to design Multi Processor Systems because Synchronization must be maintained between processors otherwise it may result in overloading of one processor and another processor may remain idle on the same time.
Reliability
Less reliable because failure in one processor will result in failure of entire system.
More reliable because failure of one processor does not halt the entire system but only speed will be slow down.
Examples
Most of Modern PCs.
Blade Servers.

OS as a Resource allocater
An operating system is a program that manages the computer hardware. The OS acts as a manager for these resources so it is viewed as a resource allocator. The OS is viewed as a control program because it manages the execution of user programs to prevent errors & improper use of the computer.

What are the resources allocated by the operating system?
In computing, resource allocation is necessary for any application to be run on thesystem. When the user opens any program this will be counted as a process, and therefore requires the computer to allocate certain resources for it to be able to run.

What is system resource management and operating system?
Resource management is the dynamic allocation and de-allocation by anoperating system of processor cores, memory pages, and various types of bandwidth to computations that compete for those resources. The objective is to allocate resources so as to optimize responsiveness subject to the finite resourcesavailable.

operating system acts as a Resource Manager

Modern computers consist of processors, memories, timers, disks, mice, network interfaces, printers, and a wide variety of other devices. In the alternative view, the job of the operating system is to provide for an orderly and controlled allocation of the processors, memories, and input/output devices among the various programs competing for them.
When a computer (or network) has multiple users, the need for managing and protecting the memory, input/output devices, and other resources is even greater, since the users might otherwise interface with one another. In addition, users often need to share not only hardware, but information (files, databases, etc.) as well. In short, this view of the operating system holds that its primary task is to keep track of which programs are using which resources, to grant resource requests, to account for usage, and to mediate conflicting requests from different programs and users.
Resource management includes multiplexing (sharing) resources in two different ways:
  1. Time Multiplexing
  2. Space Multiplexing
1. Time Multiplexing
When the resource is time multiplexed, different programs or users take turns using it. First one of them gets to use the resource, then another, and so on.
For example:
With only one CPU and multiple programs that want to run on it, operating system first allocates the CPU to one long enough, another one gets to use the CPU, then another and ten eventually the first one again.
Determining how the resource is time multiplexed – who goes next and for how long – is the task of the operating system.
2. Space Multiplexing
In space multiplexing, instead of the customers taking turns, each one gets part of the resource.
For example:

Main memory is normally divided up among several running programs, so each one can be resident at the same time (for example, in order to take turns using the CPU). Assuming there is enough memory to hold multiple programs, it is more efficient to hold several programs in memory at once rather than give one of them all of it, especially if it only needs a small fraction of the total. Of course, this raises issues of fairness, protection, and so on, and it is up to the operating system to solve them.

The Barcelona player is returning to the city of Rosario to wed Antonella Roccuzzo, whom he met there before he moved to Spain aged 13.
Argentine newspaper Clarín has called it "the wedding of the year" and even "the wedding of the century".
Messi's teammates, including Luis Suárez and Neymar, will be among the 260 guests, it said.
Many have flown in on private jets.
Extra police officers have been drafted in to ensure security is maintained around the hotel, while a private security firm will work inside to keep out any potential gatecrashers.
Around 150 journalists have received accreditation to enter a special press area, but will not have full access to the venue, said organisers.
Messi, 30, met his future wife when he was just five years old.
She is the cousin of his best friend, Lucas Scaglia, who also became a professional football player.
Messi accepted an offer to play for Barcelona when he was 13, on condition they pay for treatment for his growth hormone deficiency.
He has spoken about the difficulties he faced on leaving behind his loved ones and former club.
The couple, who now live in Barcelona, have two sons together.
In May, his appeal against a 21-month jail term for tax evasion in Spain was rejected. He is unlikely to go to prison as the sentence can be served under probation or possibly avoided by paying a fine.
The event will take place at Rosario's City Center hotel complex, which has an adjoining casino.
Ms Roccuzzo, 29, is expected to wear a dress by Rosa Clara, a Barcelona-based designer who has dressed actress Eva Longoria and Spain's Queen Letizia.

India vs West Indies, ICC Women’s World Cup 2017: India beat West Indies by 7 wickets

The Indian women’s won their second consecutive game on the trot after beating West Indies in the ICC Women’s World Cup. Set a target of 184 India chased down the total with more than seven overs to spare, thanks to a brilliant hundred from Smriti Mandhana. Deservedly she was awarded the player of the match award.
On a pretty dry looking wicket which showed signs of breaking up, Indian skipper Mithali Raj won the toss and put into bat the West Indies side got off to a decent start and at one stage were 69/2. But the Indians kept chipping away with wickets at regular intervals. Poonam Yadav, Harmanpreet Kumar and Deepti Sharma all bagged two wickets each. Ekta Bisht also grabbed one wicket.
It was the work of the slower Indian bowlers which did most of the damage and stemmed the flow of runs in check. In the middle overs, the opposition batsmen never got going. From 69/2 the Windies suddenly found themselves reeling at 146/8. A steady partnership by Shanel Daley (33) and Afy Fletcher (36) gave the West Indian bowlers a respectable total to bowl at.
When India came into bat they had a nervous start as they lost a couple of wickets within the first ten overs. But from thereon it was the Smriti Mandhana show. In an innings of 106 of 108 balls, she hit the bowlers to all parts of the ground. She was ably supported at the other end by skipper Mithali Raj who scored a stoic 46 of 88 deliveries. Together they saw India to safety and the game was won with more than seven overs to spare.

After getting a whopping 14.5 crore for the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League, Ben Stokes became the most valuable player , and that explains how he repaid the investment made in him. So when he was asked how exactly did he spend the money, he said that he spent some on buying a supercar, and the rest is still untouched. “You buy a flash new super car. And that’s it. I won’t be touching the rest for a long time,” Stokes said.

England and world's leading all-rounder Ben Stokes became the costliest foreign recruit ever in the Indian Premier League when he was bought by Rising Pune Supergiants franchise for a whopping INR 14.5 crore (USD 2.16 million approx) during the players' auction for the tenth edition of the league. The New Zealand-born player is also the second highest paid active player in the IPL, behind Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli. Stokes was instrumental in paving Pune's road to its maiden IPL final, where they eventually lost to two-time former champions Mumbai Indians.
However, the 26-year-old Stokes lived up to Pune's expectations and justified the big, fat pay cheque with some spectacular performances during the course of the IPL 2017. Stokes, who was only available till the round robin stage and missed the qualifiers as well as the final, ended up as the Pune's fifth highest run-getter and third highest wicket-taker. Stokes amassed 316 runs with the highest score of 103 not out and picked up 12 wickets with a best of 3 for 18.

Stokes' accomplishments with both bat and ball made him one of the most talked-about and valued players during the season - giving him the crown of the best all-rounder in the world. He was also named as the player of the tournament
Now, Stokes is relishing the huge attention which has followed his success.
